Getting behind the camera instead of directing it

Most of the time I'm directing a shoot or working with a photographer. Every so often it's better to pick up the camera myself. I'll happily lose a day to retouching, but the lesson that stuck is getting it right in the frame first, so there's less to fix afterwards.
